The limit of AI efficiency isn’t the technology. It’s us and the speed at which we can actually change.

You know the post. You’ve seen it on LinkedIn, on X, on Hacker News. Some variation of: “On a lazy Saturday afternoon, I used AI to rebuild an entire product in three hours.” The tone is always the same. A cocktail of humility and flex, a casual miracle performed between brunch and dinner.
The latest specimen is OpenClaw, which started as a weekend hack by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger. Two months later, it had over 100,000 GitHub stars and drew two million visitors in a single week.2 Before that, it was Steve Yegge’s Gas Town, an elaborate orchestration of dozens of coding agents that set the developer world on fire.3 Before that, it was a hundred other posts about shipping MVPs in an afternoon, replacing months of work with a well-crafted prompt.
The speed is real. The capability is real. I’m not here to argue otherwise. I built a near (lol) production-grade SaaS platform part-time over eight weeks using Claude Code without writing application code myself. I know what these tools can do.
But I’ve been watching the efficiency narrative accelerate past a question it doesn’t want to ask: faster toward what?
The Firehose
Advances in how to use AI are coming at a pace that makes “drinking from a firehose” feel quaint. Every week brings a new agent, a new workflow, a new claim of hours reclaimed: personal productivity, software production, both at once.
Just in the last week, these posts clogged my feed with triumphant recipes for saving even more time I didn’t need:
A founder halted all engineering at his startup because his CTO shipped a production-ready feature in a single day using AI agents. Full stack: database migrations, cron jobs, UI, tested against simulated prod. The team stopped everything to retool around the method. He called it the highest-leverage day the company ever had.
A developer running five AI agents in parallel from his terminal, shipping like a ten-person engineering team. The bottleneck, he says, has moved upstream: from writing code to deciding what to build. Every PM who can’t prompt and prototype just became replaceable. Millions of views.
An engineer describing a six-layer orchestration system: scoping frameworks, task registries, isolated git branches per agent, parallel terminal sessions, a cron-based babysitter, and a self-improvement loop where every merged PR makes the system write better prompts. Six layers. Zero mentions of a user.
A post claiming the poster already built the orchestration layer that Andrej Karpathy just named “Claws,” a meta-framework for managing autonomous agent sessions. Most agent sessions top out around 25 to 45 minutes. This guy runs them for 75, sometimes overnight, with agents implementing features across dozens of files, running tests, fixing failures, and iterating until done without human intervention. The models are ready, the patterns exist, you’re falling behind. Buried near the bottom, one concessive sentence: “But it requires behavior change.”
The pitch across all of it is uniform: give us your repetitive work and we’ll give you back your life. Email triage, calendar management, meeting prep, code generation, bug fixes, documentation. All automatable, all shrinkable, all allegedly standing between you and the work that really matters.
Here’s my question: is any of this really the thing that’s going to make my life meaningfully better? When I look at the assistant tools and the agent swarms side-by-side, I see a massive industry organized around the assumption that my problem is inefficiency. But is it? How far can this model actually go before the returns start diminishing — and before I stop caring about being faster?
The Efficiency Ceiling
Let’s look at what the data actually says.
A UK government study found that workers using AI assistants saved 26 minutes per day on routine tasks.4 That’s real, but it’s modest — about two work-weeks per year. Enough time for a nice vacation, if you save it all up and don’t spend it scrolling through AI tool announcements. Meanwhile, ActivTrak’s 2025 workplace survey found that focus efficiency actually dropped from 65% to 62% over the same period.5 We’re getting more tools and less focused. We’re optimizing the inbox while losing the plot.
The software development side is even more revealing. The METR study (a proper randomized controlled trial, not a vendor benchmark) found that experienced open-source developers using frontier AI tools (Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet) took 19% longer to complete tasks than those working without AI.6 That alone is striking. But the kicker: after the study, those same developers estimated AI had sped them up by 20%.7 The gap between perceived and actual productivity was nearly 40 percentage points. We’re not just failing to get faster — we’re convinced we’re succeeding while we’re not.
And just this week, METR announced they’re redesigning their follow-up study because developers increasingly refuse to work without AI, even for a paid experiment, creating selection bias so severe the data became unreliable.8 People are addicted to the feeling of efficiency even when the measurement doesn’t support it. We’ve invented productivity placebo.
The 2025 Stack Overflow survey tells a messier story than the headline adoption numbers suggest: 84% of developers are using or planning to use AI tools,9 but positive sentiment actually decreased from over 70% in previous years to just 60%.10 And the most recognized impacts were personal efficiency gains, not team-wide impact.11 The tools make individuals feel faster. They don’t make organizations move faster.
The Weekend Replacement
So now run the efficiency argument to its logical conclusion. If the tools keep getting faster and the agents keep getting more capable, what does the end state look like?
Picture this:
“Boss, this weekend I used my free local LLM to replace all of SAP, Salesforce, Microsoft Office, and Slack. I migrated all the data and deleted those apps from the system, so you can cancel those contracts.”
Or this:
“Last weekend I cleared 7 years of backlog for 20 products I offer to my customers with my super swarm and then shipped them. It’s about 1,000 features. Why aren’t users using it yet?”
These are absurd. They’re meant to be. But they’re absurd in a way that exposes something the efficiency narrative ignores.
In the first scenario, the software can be replaced in a weekend. The organizational muscle memory cannot. The training programs, the integration with human processes, the institutional knowledge of how-we-do-things-here, the political buy-in, the change management — none of it moved. You swapped the engine but the factory is still designed for steam.
In the second scenario, the features got built. But features don’t create value. Adoption creates value. Someone has to evaluate those features, trust them, learn them, integrate them into their workflow, and change their behavior accordingly. All of that happens at human speed. A thousand features delivered on Monday don’t become a thousand features used on Tuesday.
This isn’t hypothetical hand-wringing. OpenClaw already showed us how this breaks: a computer science student configured his OpenClaw agent to explore its capabilities and later discovered it had autonomously created a dating profile on MoltMatch and was screening potential matches without his knowledge.12 His agent was out there swiping right while he was debugging. The machine was efficient. The human hadn’t consented.
Meanwhile, the developers managing their shiny new agent swarms? Axios reported this week that they’re already complaining of burnout. Running swarms of AI agents is expensive and exhausting.13 The efficiency tools are creating new inefficiencies: coordination overhead, review burden, trust verification. And those scale with the very speed they enable.
The Dynamo Problem
None of this is new. Every automation wave in history has collided with the same wall. The constraint was never “can we make it” but “can the world receive it.”
In 1990, Stanford economist Paul David published a paper called “The Dynamo and the Computer” that should be required reading for anyone building AI products today. David studied the adoption of electricity in manufacturing and found something counterintuitive: electric light bulbs were available by 1879, generating stations existed by 1881, yet a thoughtful observer in 1900 would have found little evidence that the electricity revolution was making business more efficient.14
The reason was structural. Steam-powered factories were designed around the steam engine: multi-story buildings stacked around a central power source, with drive belts all running at the same speed. The flow of work followed the architecture of power transmission, not the logic of production. When electric dynamos arrived, factory owners did the obvious thing: they ripped out the steam engine and dropped in a dynamo.15
Productivity barely improved.
The real gains came four decades later. In the 1920s, U.S. manufacturing productivity growth exceeded 5% per year. Extraordinary by any standard.16 What changed wasn’t the technology. It was everything else. Factories were redesigned on single floors. Production lines were rearranged to follow the flow of materials. Each worker got their own small electric motor. And once workers could make more decisions, they needed more training and different contracts to encourage them to take responsibility.17 The human systems had to be rebuilt to match the capability of the technology.
David’s paper was written to explain what economist Robert Solow had observed in 1987: “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.”18 This became known as the Solow Productivity Paradox. Despite massive investment in information technology throughout the 1970s and 80s, productivity growth stalled.
The paradox is back. A Fortune article from last week reported that among 6,000 CEOs, CFOs, and other executives surveyed by the National Bureau of Economic Research, AI has had no measurable impact on employment or productivity.19 Apollo’s chief economist put it bluntly: AI is everywhere except in the employment data, the productivity data, and the inflation data.20
McKinsey has been tracking this pattern for years. Their analysis found that less than a third of core operations across surveyed companies were automated or digitized. Not because of technology limitations, but because of adoption barriers, lag effects, and transition costs.21 The tools exist. The organizations haven’t reorganized around them.
Economists Brynjolfsson, Rock, and Syverson formalized this in 2020 as the “Productivity J-Curve”: transformative general-purpose technologies like electricity, computing, and now AI require co-invention of new processes, products, business models, and human capital. These intangible investments are poorly measured in aggregate statistics, creating a curve where productivity appears to drop before it eventually rises.22 We’re in the dip. And the answer is… to be even more efficient??
The Human Speed Limit
So here’s the hot take: the natural limit of AI efficiency is human absorption.
It doesn’t matter how fast your agent swarm can clear a backlog, or how many emails your assistant can triage while you sleep. You can ship a SaaS platform in a weekend. (I know, I basically did.) The value of all of that output is still gated by the speed at which humans can evaluate it, trust it, learn it, adopt it, and integrate it into the way they actually live and work.
And better tools won’t fix that. Humans evaluate, deliberate, build trust, change habits, and reorganize institutions at human speed. That speed is not a deficiency to be engineered away. It’s the design constraint of every system that involves people (every system that matters, that is).
A Stanford researcher studying AI agent adoption found that technical accuracy dominates 83% of agent assessments, but that real-world usage revealed obstacles that metrics don’t capture.23 An IEEE Spectrum survey of the industry concluded that 2025 was a year of prototyping, and that 2026 would be the year organizations confront the difficulties of scaling AI in production. Difficulties that are fundamentally human, not technical.24
The same pattern holds for agent swarms in software development. The drive toward hyper-efficiency in producing code assumes that code production is the bottleneck. But the bottleneck moved years ago: architecture decisions, code review, testing strategy, deployment safety, and organizational trust in what ships. Pouring more code into that pipeline faster doesn’t speed up the pipeline. It floods it.
The Washing Machine With No Clothes In It
If you remove all friction from production but don’t speed up adoption, you get a system that’s running very fast in place. A washing machine with no clothes in it. Impressive engineering. Zero utility.
The efficiency narrative assumes that the value is in the making. But the value was never in the making. The value is in the using: a human changing their behavior, trusting a new workflow, reorganizing their day around a new capability. That part doesn’t scale with compute. It scales with culture, training, trust, and time.
This matters for how we invest, what we build, and what we promise. If the limit of AI efficiency is human absorption, then the most valuable work isn’t making the machines faster. It’s making the humans ready. Change management. Training programs. Building trust — not building features.
Unless, of course, humans are expendable. If you’re optimizing a system with no one on the receiving end, no adoption required, no trust to build — then sure, speed is the only variable that matters.
But then, who is all this efficiency for? Who are the features for, without humans to use them?
The fastest machine in a room full of humans still moves at the speed of humans. That’s not a bug. That’s the point.
